What the Thames Path Is…And Isn’t

The Thames Path is the Goldilocks Trail…

The Thames Path and the National Trails System

A round black-and-white sign says Thames Path National Trail with a white arrow pointing right, mounted on a wet, dark brick wall. Theres some green moss between the bricks. A red brick wall is in the background.

Thames River v. Thames Path: There is a difference…

A narrow dirt path winds through a tunnel of arching trees with yellowing leaves, some fallen on the ground, creating a natural canopy over the walkway in an autumn landscape.
There are some isolated spots on the path, particularly from the source to Oxford, but this is not like the Appalachian Trail.  Food, drink, and help if you need it, are always nearby…

Why Did I Walk Alone?

A weathered sign reads DANGER - QUICKSAND KEEP TO THE BRIDLEPATH, surrounded by dense greenery and partially obscured by vegetation and a barbed wire fence.

When it came to the Trailblazer Guide, I ripped out the pages I needed and packed those, rather than the whole book. I minimized pack weight by recycling the pages I used that day.

And larger cities like Oxford and Greenwich..

And, of course, right through the heart of London…

Lessons from a Solo Hike On the Thames Path

ALWAYS do an Idiot Check before leaving a place. It will save you time and headaches later on.

2. Things Don’t Go As Planned…It Will Be Okay

Person wearing blue pants and muddy black shoes standing on green grass with patches of dirt and fallen leaves visible. Photo is taken from the persons perspective, looking down at their legs and feet.

Scoop, don’t lift…

Roll with setbacks and learn to break down your problems into smaller solveable solutions. Secondly: Scoop, don’t lift, when trying to extract your boots from mud. Also, putting crumpled up newspaper (or even toilet paper) in your hiking boots each night will help to absorb moisture.

3. Trusting My Instincts

Is it Anxiety or Instinct?

Trust your instincts.

4. Letting Go of the “Shoulds” and “Musts”

A sign titled River Thames Walk gives distances to the river’s source (40 miles) and the sea (153 miles), and provides historical information about Newbridge, the English Civil War, and King Charles.
You are right where you ought to be…

Like the song says… Let It Go. I was so caught up in reaching my destination that I was forgetting the journey was the most important thing.

Allow Yourself to be Surprised

People in bright clothing stand at the edge of a calm lake near dense greenery and a small decorative stone structure; yellow leaves are visible in the foreground.
I came across a group of women wild swimming.
Had I brought my bathing suit, I probably would have joined them.

Finishing the Thames Path

A stone plaque above a wall marks the Greenwich Meridian Line, with faded text reading Greenwich Meridian and Longitude East/West. A vertical line runs down the wall, and a metal fence is visible at the top.
