Over the years, I’ve gotten my packing down to a science, knowing which travel accessories are the most useful, and which are a complete waste of money and valuable packing real estate. To save you stress and time, I’ve put together this list of my must-have, don’t leave home without them, best travel accessories. I’ll share what I use to make my travel stress-free, yet still packing light! Remember, I don’t ever check a bag when I travel, so everything must fit in my backpack. So read on!!
Having the right travel accessories can save you time and headaches while on the go. They help you enjoy the trip, rather than endure it. So let’s dive in and discover the six essential items you need to pack for your next adventure– and they might not be what you think!
Best Travel Accessories
Osprey Backpack
I’ve had my Osprey Ace 50L Backpack for nearly 5 years now. It’s gone with me on long-distance hikes, short weekend girls getaways, and everything in between. I have never needed to check the bag; it fits nicely in the overhead storage compartments on airplanes.
The thing I love about traveling with a pack rather than a carry-on bag (or suitcase) is that is leaves my hands free. Plus, carry-on luggage or luggage with wheels can break down– and using the luggage becomes a complete nightmare.
Note: It’s important to have a backpack that fits you well. If you have never been properly fitted for a backpack, it’s in your best interest to purchase your pack from a sporting goods store where you can try on a few and have someone check the fit for you.
Sometimes I think choosing a backpack is a bit like choosing a dress. The right one just seems to find you.
New Outlander Day Pack
Unless you’re hiking or traveling to a different destination each day, you won’t need to carry around your backpack (or your carry on suitcase) on the daily.

Enter the best day pack I’ve ever had: the New Outlander Daypack available at Amazon for just about $25! Its super-light, durable, and gives you ample space for storing your belongings for a day out. It features multiple compartments for better organization, including a spacious main pocket and two zippered front pockets. It even has two mesh compartments on the side for your water bottle.
But, what sets this daypack apart is its collapsible design – the bag can be folded into its inner pouch, turning it into a compact size that easily fits into your larger backpack or suitcase. This unique feature makes it a space-saving wonder, perfect for those spontaneous shopping sprees during your travels. I am on my second daypack, and the only reason I needed a second one was because a pen exploded in my first pack. I didn’t even consider another brand.
Best (and Most Budget Friendly) Travel Accessory: Medication Organizer
As I get older, I feel this need to plan for all the possible health issues that can come up while traveling. Headaches, stomach upset, motion sickness, sprained ankle… I was packing a container for each malady, and it was a complete waste of time. 🤣
I have fallen in love this compact pill organizer and I highly recommend one for travel. They can be purchased in packages of three too… for your bag, your car, …
This is the best under $10 travel accessory you could ever have!
Inflatable Travel Pillow

I really don’t understand why some people feel the need to carry around a travel pillow that isn’t inflatable. It’s a huge waste of packing space!!
Inflatable and collapsible is where it’s at. Like this one.
Not only does it collapse down to nothing in your backpack or suitcase, but you can use it in a pinch when you need an extra something in your hotel room etc. I can’t count the amount of times I’ve broken out my travel pillow for non-transportation uses.
Footwear (even if you’re not hiking)
Footwear falls into the same category as backpacks and dresses… the right pair always finds you. For the past four years, I’ve used Merrell for all my hiking and walking footwear. By all means, check them out at their website and definitely make sure your footwear is waterproof (or at least water resistant). And just like a backpack, you want to be sure you are fitted properly for these.

Universal Power Adapter

The whole concept of adapters has really changed over my years of travel. It’s no longer enough to have just an adapter for the country to which your traveling. You have to also consider if you can plug in your phone, tablet etc. for charging. And while a USB port used to cut it, my new iphone requires a USB-C (or at least a USB-C to USB-B cable).
Believe it or not, this is the one item I could consolidate and haven’t yet. I have a UK adapter and another separate one for continental Europe. It’s old school and it means I have to pack both depending upon my itinerary. Better to pack just one and be done with it.
A good example of an all-in-one universal power adapter is the VITNAR International Power Travel Adapter has everything in one easy to pack piece…It also has multiple ports if you are traveling with a partner.
Travel Money Belt
Why you need a money belt for traveling…
Traveling is a wonderful experience, but it also comes with the risk of pickpocketing and theft. A money belt provides a discreet and secure way to store your cash, credit cards, and important documents while on the go. With a money belt, you can enjoy your travels without worrying about your valuables being stolen, giving you peace of mind and allowing you to focus on exploring new destinations.

I know that crossbody bags are also popular, but I prefer a money belt in high pickpocket/theft areas because it is hidden and doesn’t immediately mark you as a tourist. I do not use a money belt everywhere or every time, but I have it for peace of mind, and that it’s given me in spades.
My belt was purchased years ago, but here is an updated version of what I have made by Lanney .
The Bottom Line (or if you’re pressed for time)
You don’t need every gadget on the market—just the right ones. Invest in a great backpack, water resistant footwear, universal adapter, inflatable travel pillow, medicine organizer, and money belt. That, and a refillable water bottle will cover the bulk of your non-clothing travel needs. Less to carry, more freedom to explore.
